ESTATE OWNERS’ BIOGRAPHY

This unique estate sale will be held at the Historic Old New Castle residence of Joe and Sally Monigle. The home, one of several the couple fully restored, reflects their expert knowledge and love for the early American and colonial era and Delaware history in the wide array of items that will be available for purchase.

Joe and Sally moved to New Castle in the mid 1950s after meeting at the University of Delaware where Joe was a returning WWII pilot.  They remained lifelong residents and stewards of the community, sharing their love for history, art, literature, and nature.  Their charming home was a showcase reflecting these lifetime passions.

Throughout the decades beginning in the 1950s, Joe and Sally were avid and knowledgeable antique collectors, traveling throughout the area to find the myriad treasures that filled their home.  Reflecting the character and era of the home, as well as Delaware’s history, they acquired numerous lovely early American tables, chairs, chests, pottery, prints, oriental rugs, original art, primitive, fine gold jewelry, sterling flatware and serving pieces. The couples’ love for history and literature is also reflected in their large collection of antique books.

Joe was also an accomplished photographer and artist who loved to paint local scenes. In past years, his paintings were enjoyed by many at local art festivals. His watercolors are in the collections of several local banks.  The sale will include a number of his original pieces which depict Historic New Castle and Wilmington, DE – including Hagley Museum.  Sally and Joe’s knowledge of art is reflected in further items available for purchase.
